Use a polarising filter to scale back glare and reflections in landscapes, and a reflector or burst of flash to open up the shadows in a portrait. Night-time portraits may be very atmospheric and colorful, but often then need some refined supplementary lighting to fill within the shadows and produce out your subject against a brilliant background. An off-camera flash is idea, or a conveyable LED panel could also be better still, especially if you want to shoot video too.
