In 1971, the Supreme Court permitted the strategy of busing youngsters to more distant faculties populated by students of the opposite race. It was a traumatic time that revealed widespread racism in major Northern cities, most notably Boston—the birthplace of school—where a sequence of ugly and violent protests erupted.
