HULDA FESTIVAL SCIENTIFIC ART COMPETITION: artscist
About the Hulda Festival
The Hulda Festival is a project coordinated by the Ilhan Koman Foundation with 14 local co-organisers across Europe. The festival takes its name from the boat M/S Hulda, a 105-year old two-mast Swedish-make schooner where the sculptor Ilhan Koman lived and worked for more than twenty years. Inspired by the scientific and innovative work of Koman, the Hulda Festival essentially exploits the notion of creativity, and uses both an onboard exhibition of the scientific artworks of Ilhan Koman, and experimental art and science workshops to explain scientific knowledge with a playful approach.

The Competition - artscist
The main objective of the Hulda Festival is to create alternative perspectives to awaken public interest in science. As indirect approaches that exploit art are more effective in attracting laymen to science rather than by simply presenting science per se; art can serve as an efficient tool in awakening attention through aesthetic and ludic associations; creativity-being the common denominator of art and science-is an essential actor in the development of knowledge-based societies which do not build merely on learned knowledge.
Basing on this objective, the Hulda Festival is launching a student competition under the title of "artscist" among higher education students in the 10 countries where the festival is taking place. "artscist" invites students to participate in the competition with innovative and creative artistic projects that vulgarise scientific phenomena. One winning author from each of the 10 cities will be invited to Istanbul for 4 days, to participate in an "Art and Science" symposium and attend the opening of the exhibition of their works.
Expected Content of Projects to Be Submitted
Students wishing to participate in this competition are invited to present their creative projects that communicate information linked to scientific disciplines, or that are based on scientific phenomena, aiming to introduce a scientific theory or phenomenon in a vulgarized manner for the general public. Laymen observing the work should understand the scientific aspect without requiring prior knowledge. These works, which are thus expected to be "scientific artworks" or "artistic experiments", shall be accompanied with vulgarising descriptions and can use any medium, as long as they don't require their authors to be permanently present to demonstrate their work (for example, no performing arts unless on filmed support screenable in a gallery).
Below, please find further details about the format of the submitted projects.
Who Can Participate
Students over 18 years old from any department in the 10 cities (Stockholm, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Bordeaux, Lisbon, Barcelona, Naples, Malta, Thessalonica, Istanbul) are invited to participate in the competition with their innovative projects. Science students are encouraged to collaborate with other students experienced in pedagogy and arts, and vice versa.
Deadlines
Participants are expected to register on "www.huldafestival.org" from March 1 to June 1, 2010 and submit their projects latest by June 1, 2010.
